About AIST HRP-5P

HRP-5P stands 182 cm tall, weighs 101 kg—the heavyweight champion of AIST's HRP series. Built with unsurpassed physical capabilities for autonomous heavy labor in hazardous environments. Key demonstration: autonomous gypsum board installation (W 1820mm x H 910mm x D 10mm, ~11 kg boards) at simulated construction sites. Robot intelligence comprises environmental measurement, object recognition, full-body motion planning/control, task execution management, and highly reliable systemization. HRP-5P represents evolution from earlier HRP models (HRP-2 bipedal walking, HRP-3 slippery surfaces and bridge bolts, revised HRP-2 disaster response). Target: construction sites, aircraft assembly, shipyards. Platform for industry-academia R&D collaboration.

PROS

  • + Unsurpassed physical capabilities for heavy labor
  • + high payload capacity (up to 56 kg total)
  • + 37 degrees of freedom for versatile motion
  • + advanced sensor suite for autonomous operation
  • + designed for unstructured construction/industrial environments

CONS

  • - Current status is a research prototype
  • - development costs are high
  • - reportedly methodical/slow operating speed

Use Cases

Autonomous gypsum board installation heavy material handling in construction large structure assembly (aircraft/shipyards) replacing human labor in hazardous environments R&D platform for whole-body motion planning
