About Honda P-Series
Honda's P-series humanoids (P1-1993, P2-1996, P3-1997, P4-2000) pioneered modern bipedal humanoid robotics before ASIMO. P1 stood 191.5 cm, weighed 175 kg—massive by later standards but revolutionary for autonomous walking. P2 reduced size to 182 cm, 210 kg; first to walk stairs. P3 (160 cm, 130 kg) approached human dimensions with improved agility. P4 became ASIMO Gen 1. The P-series established fundamental bipedal locomotion technologies: predicted movement control, real-time balance adjustment, and joint coordination. While never commercial products, these platforms inspired global humanoid investment and demonstrated Honda's engineering leadership.
PROS
- + Pioneered autonomous bipedal locomotion
- + P2 was the world's first self-contained
- + wireless walking humanoid robot
- + significant size reduction and improved agility across the series
- + established core technologies for the ASIMO platform
- + demonstrated object manipulation capabilities (P1
- + P3).
CONS
- - Large and heavy compared to later humanoids (P1 weighed 175 kg)
- - P1 relied on external power and a computer
- - controlled via a workstation (P3) rather than a portable controller.
